SMALL DETAILS. BIG DIFFERENCE.
Your broadband connection brings internet to your home; Wi-Fi carries it around your rooms. A faster package may not fix a weak signal upstairs. Before upgrading, compare performance close to your router and, where possible, with a wired connection. Your devices and the layout of your home also affect what you experience.
Write down the minimum term, setup charge and each scheduled price change. Add the charges over the contract, then divide by its length for an average monthly cost. Treat vouchers separately: a conditional reward is not the same as a lower bill. New contracts must state scheduled price increases in pounds and pence, with their timing, rather than tie them to future inflation. Read Ofcom's guidance ↗
Download speed affects receiving files and streaming. Upload speed affects sending large files, cloud backups and video calls. Ask for both figures, as well as the speed estimate for your address. For gaming, a stable connection and low latency matter alongside download speed; a larger Mbps number alone does not guarantee smoother play.
Find your contract end date and ask whether leaving early brings a charge. Check installation dates and whether a landline, TV package or other bundle is affected before committing. Compare any cheaper tariff your current provider offers with alternatives. If affordability is a concern, check whether you qualify for a social tariff. Explore Ofcom's advice ↗
